Your Child’s First Dental Visit
Building trust and healthy smiles from the very first hello.
A child’s first dental visit sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
At Little Smiles Children’s Dentistry, our goal is simple:
create a calm, positive experience that builds trust — not fear.
Proudly welcoming families from St. Augustine, Palm Coast, St Johns & Flagler County.
When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth erupting.
Early visits are short, gentle, and focused on prevention — not treatment. By starting early, we can spot potential issues like tongue-ties or cavities before they become problems.
Did you know?
Baby teeth are crucial for speaking, eating, and holding space for adult teeth. Keeping them healthy sets the stage for a lifetime of smiles.

What to expect next
In many cases, children sit in a parent’s lap — especially toddlers. This is called a "Knee-to-Knee" exam.
Will My Child Be in Pain?
No. First visits are designed to be comfortable and non-invasive. There are no drills, needles, or pressure to “perform.”
What Should Parents Bring?
- Insurance information (if applicable)
- Any previous dental records
- Your questions (we encourage them!)
What If My Child Is Nervous?
Every child is different. We tailor each visit to your child’s comfort level and needs.
For children with high anxiety, we offer Sedation Dentistry. We also specialize in Special Needs Dentistry for children who need extra patience and care.
How Long Does the First Visit Take?
Most first visits last about 30 minutes. We keep it short and positive to build confidence.
