Sedation Dentistry for Anxious Kids in St. Augustine & Palm Coast

Some children are naturally anxious about the dentist. Others are very young, have sensitive gag reflexes, or need multiple procedures completed in a single visit. For these children, standard appointments aren't always the right fit — and that's okay.

At Little Smiles Children's Dentistry, we offer safe, professionally administered sedation options for children at both our St. Augustine and Palm Coast offices. Our board-certified pediatric team has performed hundreds of sedation procedures for kids of all ages — from toddlers to teens.

Sedation may also be recommended alongside certain procedures, including laser tongue-tie and lip-tie release for older or anxious children, tooth extractions, and emergency dental treatment — depending on your child's age and needs.

Both locations accepting new patients. No referral needed.

🛡️ Your Child's Safety Is Non-Negotiable

We never have one person manage both sedation and dentistry at the same time. For IV sedation, we bring in a dedicated board-certified medical anesthesiologist from Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates (PDAA) to monitor your child's heart rate, oxygen, and vitals — so our dentist can focus 100% on treatment.

We follow all guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD).

When Is Sedation Dentistry Recommended for Children?

Every child is different. Our team assesses each patient individually — we never recommend sedation unless the benefit to your child is clear. Common situations where sedation helps:

Dental Anxiety

Children who feel strong fear or panic about dental appointments — even routine cleanings. Sedation breaks the cycle of anxiety and helps them build a positive relationship with dental care for life.

Very Young Children

Toddlers and young children who cannot sit still long enough for necessary treatment, or who are too young to understand instructions. Sedation allows care to be completed safely and comfortably.

Special Healthcare Needs

Children with autism, sensory processing disorders, cerebral palsy, or other conditions that make a standard dental appointment challenging. We specialize in special needs dental care.

Extensive Treatment

Multiple cavities, extractions, or complex restorations that would require several long appointments. Sedation allows us to complete everything safely in one visit, reducing stress for the whole family.

Strong Gag Reflex

Children who gag easily during exams or X-rays, making routine care difficult. Even light sedation can help these children get through appointments comfortably.

Dental Emergencies

A child in pain who needs immediate emergency dental treatment may not be able to cooperate without sedation. We offer same-day emergency consultations at both locations.

Our Sedation Options for Kids

We offer two levels of sedation — both available at our St. Augustine and Palm Coast offices. Your child's age, anxiety level, and treatment needs determine which option is right.

Nitrous Oxide — Laughing Gas

Best for: Mild to moderate anxiety, sensitive gag reflex, shorter procedures.

A sweet-smelling gas breathed through a small nose mask. Your child stays awake and aware, but feels calm, relaxed, and a little floaty. It works within minutes, wears off completely before you leave the office, and has an excellent safety record in children of all ages.

  • Child remains awake and responsive
  • Wears off within minutes — no grogginess
  • No fasting required (light meal is fine)
  • Safe for children of all ages

IV Sedation — Deep Sleep Dentistry

Best for: Very young children, special needs, severe anxiety, or extensive multi-procedure visits.

Your child will sleep comfortably through the entire visit and wake up with no memory of the procedure. We partner with Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates (PDAA) — a board-certified medical anesthesiologist is present throughout, monitoring vitals at hospital-grade standards right here in our office.

  • Child is fully asleep — no awareness or memory
  • Dedicated anesthesiologist present at all times
  • Ideal for completing multiple procedures in one visit
  • Fasting required — we provide full pre-op instructions

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for Children?

Yes — when performed by a properly trained and equipped team following established safety protocols. Sedation dentistry for children has been practiced safely for decades, and at Little Smiles, we hold ourselves to the highest possible standard.

For nitrous oxide, our own team administers and monitors the sedation. The gas has an excellent safety profile in pediatric dentistry and is approved for use in children by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

For IV sedation, we do not have our dentist manage sedation and dental work simultaneously. A dedicated board-certified anesthesiologist from Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates (PDAA) is physically present for the entire procedure, continuously monitoring your child's heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and breathing — the same standard used in a hospital setting.

Before any sedation appointment, we conduct a thorough medical history review and pre-procedure consultation. If a child is not an appropriate candidate for sedation, we will tell you clearly and discuss alternatives. Your child's safety always comes before completing a procedure.

What to Expect at Your Child's Sedation Appointment

Here's exactly what happens, so you and your child know what to expect from start to finish.

1

Pre-Sedation Consultation

We review your child's full medical history, current medications, and dental needs. We discuss which sedation option is appropriate and provide written instructions for the day of the appointment — including fasting rules if required.

2

Arrival & Pre-Procedure Check

When you arrive, our team — and the anesthesiologist for IV cases — does a final check of vitals and confirms the plan. We take the time to make your child comfortable before anything begins.

3

Sedation is Administered

For nitrous oxide, a small, comfortable nose mask is placed and the gas begins working within a few minutes. For IV sedation, the anesthesiologist administers medication through a small IV line — your child drifts off to sleep quickly and peacefully.

4

Treatment is Completed

While your child is sedated, our dentist completes all necessary treatment — fillings, extractions, cleanings, or other procedures — carefully and thoroughly. The anesthesiologist monitors vitals continuously throughout.

5

Recovery & Discharge

For nitrous oxide, your child is fully alert within minutes of removing the mask. For IV sedation, your child rests in our recovery area until they are stable and comfortable. We review aftercare instructions with you before you leave — and we're available by phone if you have any questions at home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kids' Sedation Dentistry

Is sedation dentistry safe for children?

Yes. We follow strict AAPD safety guidelines. For IV sedation, a board-certified medical anesthesiologist from PDAA monitors your child's vitals the entire time — completely separate from the dentist providing treatment. We never combine both roles.

Will my child be awake or asleep?

With nitrous oxide, your child is awake but calm and relaxed — they can still respond to our team. With IV sedation, your child is fully asleep and will wake up with no memory of the procedure at all.

When is sedation recommended?

We recommend sedation for children with significant dental anxiety, very young children, kids with special healthcare needs, strong gag reflexes, or those needing extensive treatment. Our team reviews every child's situation individually before making a recommendation.

How do I prepare my child?

For nitrous oxide, a light meal beforehand is fine. For IV sedation, strict fasting is required — no food or drink after midnight the night before. We give you a complete written checklist at your pre-sedation consultation so nothing is left to guess.

Does my child need a driver home?

For nitrous oxide, the effects wear off within minutes and most children return to normal activities quickly. For IV sedation, a responsible adult must take your child home and stay with them for the rest of the day — no exceptions for safety reasons.

Is sedation available at both locations?

Yes. We offer both nitrous oxide and IV sedation at our St. Augustine office and our Palm Coast office. Call the location closest to you to schedule a sedation consultation.
