First Birthday, First Dental Visit

Many parents are surprised when we tell them their baby should see us by their first birthday. "But they hardly have any teeth!" is a common reaction. However, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends establishing a "Dental Home" by age one. At Little Smiles Children's Dentistry — the trusted pediatric dentist for Northeast Florida families — we make that first visit easy, gentle, and actually fun for your little one.

Why so early?

Early visits aren't just about checking for cavities (though that is important!). They are about:

  • Acclimation: Letting your child realize the dentist is a safe, fun place before they are old enough to develop fear.
  • Prevention: We discuss diet, bottles, and thumb-sucking habits that could affect their smile later.
  • Development: We check for tongue-ties or lip-ties that might impact feeding or speech. If a concern is found, we offer gentle laser frenectomy right in our office — no referral needed.

What happens at the visit?

For infants and toddlers, we use a "Knee-to-Knee" technique. You sit facing the doctor, and your child lays back on our lap while holding your hands. It allows us to do a quick exam while your child stays safely connected to you.

Ready to Schedule Your Baby's First Visit?

We're accepting new patients at both our pediatric dental office in St. Augustine and our Palm Coast office — no referral needed. If your little one is approaching their first birthday, give us a call or book online today.
